Top 10 Kdrama on Netflix
Initially, I was not sure whether I would like to watch Korean dramas. However, after watching the first k-drama, I am continuously watching these dramas. I am not sure why do I like these Korean dramas so much. I have tried to watch dramas from other Asian countries like China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan. Interestingly, I could not able to engage with dramas from these countries. I do not understand the Korean language, but somehow it sounds better than other Asian languages.
How I got to know about Korean drama is an interesting story. I was looking for some comedy shows on Netflix. While going through the search result, I got to know about the Canadian Netflix series- Kim's Convenience. It was an English series about a Korean family who migrated from Korea to Canada for a better future. Because I watched that series, Netflix started showing me K-drama results. The first k-drama that I watched was Crash Landing on You. After the Game of Thrown, this was the first drama that hooked me so much. So, it will be at top of my favourite k-drams.
1. Crash Landing on You:
It is a love story about a North Korean Armyman falling in love with a South Korean businesswoman. The storyline sounds absurd but the way they portrayed it on the screen is beyond imagination. The series has everything: romance, comedy, action, scenery and fabulous performances by all actors. I liked the way they ended each episode ensuring you will watch the next episode immediately. The chemistry between the lead pair, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin, was awesome along with their chemistry with other army men. I think the first 10 -12 episodes where the story was played in North Korea were really good. Even though the main storyline had serious nature, humour was present throughout all episodes.
2. Itewana Class:
After watching Crash Landing on You, I watched Itewana Class. In this drama, an underdog takes revenge for wrongdoing done by a businessman for whom his father used to work. Even though the storyline sounds familiar, its treatment is different. In this drama, the main character showed us what is self-respect and how self-determination can do wonders for you. It also showed that there are easy and difficult ways to live your life and it's up to you how you look at these things. Importantly, even if you do not watch this drama, please listen to its OST- START by Gaho, it will surely give you some goosebumps.
3. Sky Castle:
I was avoiding this drama for so many days because I thought it would be very serious. Of course, Sky Castle touches the very serious subject of the educational system in the country. It is a universal subject and most Asian people can relate to it. As an Indian, I can see the similarity between Indian and Korean educational systems. This is the drama where the acting done by leading characters is on the next level. They have shown very rich families but the root cause remains the same.
4. Hi Bye Mama:
When I read the storyline of 'Hi Bye Mama,, I thought let's watch it later. But, I was wrong. After watching so many Kdrama, one thing that I learned that most of the original Netflix k-dramas are good and unique. It has a unique storyline where a mother dies while giving birth to her daughter and becomes a ghost. I cried the most while watching this series. I liked the scene where the lead actor asks his in-laws to take care of his daughter because he is devasted because of this incident. Importantly, this drama does not have any negative character as such. It emphasizes the importance of family and friendship.
5. Backstreet Rookie:
I was watching 'It's Ok not to be OK' on Netflix and I got bored after watching half of its episodes. This series really appreciated by many viewers for its take on the topic of mental health. Anyway, I was something lighter and funny. That's when I started watching Backstreet Rookie on iQIYI - a Chinese app to watch C-dramas. The main thing why I liked this series so much is its lead pair, Ji Chang Woo and Kim Yoo Jung. They looked cute together. Being an action hero, Chang Woo does not have any action scene in this drama and all actions are taken care by Yoo Jung.
6. Kill Me Heal Me
This drama has a unique storyline where a son from a rich family is facing a split personality disorder and how a female doctor helps him to remove personality. The story is too complex and the lead actor has portrayed 5-6 different personas each having its own personality. It has one of the greatest twists that a drama can have. It also has one of the best OSTs- a Korean rap song.
7. My ID is Gangnam Beauty
Again, this is an original series by Netflix and it asks a basic question: Why is important? Inner beauty or outer one? Most of us will say that inner beauty is more important but consciously or unconsciously we tend to give more importance to outer beauty. Plastic surgery can make your face beautiful and it is not necessary that you will feel confident just because your face becomes beautiful. This was the first series where I got to know about the Korean educational system a little bit.
8. Secret Graden
I was very impressed by Hyun Bin after watching Crash Landing on You. I searched other dramas that Hyun Bin acted and available on Netflix. Secret Graden is one of his old dramas. There is a connection between two main characters which is revealed later in the show. In between, their souls get switched with each other.
9. Moment of 18:
Most of people will be able to relate with this show because everyone of us goes through that phase of teenage. They have shown students from various financial background and the problems faced by them. It has one of the best line in OST where it says - memories don't say good bye.
10. Memories of Alhambra
Again, this is a Hyun Bin show produced by Netflix. It has a different storyline than usual kdramas have. It has a game background and plays a vital role in the whole story. The writer builds an enagaing story using AI elements and human emotions.
