What innovations we can bring in cricket?
Even though we Indians love cricket, it is not one of the popular games across the world. Football, Tennis will certainly take the top spot in this regard. Cricket is hardly played by 12 countries in its main division while other countries play it in subsequent division (mostly without sponsors and exposure).
I was just thinking, what innovations we can bring in the various formats of the game: T20, One-day and Test to make it more interesting.
1. Why play only 11 players when the squad always has 15 players.
In football, you can substitute three players across 90 minutes. There are a few similarities between cricket and football. They are team sports and each team has 11 players. Out of these 11 players, 10 moves across the ground and the remaining one holds in position, i.e., a goalkeeper in football and a wicket-keeper in cricket. Then, why can we not use the rule of substitutes in cricket?
In cricket, we can allow the team to substitute one player in each inning. If the team is balling first, then they can replace the bowler who has an off-day with someone who is warming up the bench. Similarly, while batting the team can replace a bowler with a batsman.
Or to make it more simple, the team can play with seven batsmen and four bowlers while batting. When they are going to ball, a batsman can be replaced with a genuine bowler. In this way, many players will get a chance to showcase their talent.
2. Giving runs according to distance travelled by a ball
This is just an idea. Someone like Gayle hits the six farther away from the boundary line. Can we give him eight or 10 runs depending on the distance travelled by the ball. This would ensure that no score is unachievable in the final over of a T20 or one day match.
3. Have four inninngs in a one-day match
Sachin Tendulkar has already suggested this one. Each team will play 25 overs and then they will continue to play where they left. You can bring a twist to this idea. We all like to watch batsmen doing batting and bowlers doing bowling. So, in each inning, we can ask the team to play its seven top batsmen. In this way, even if the team does not perform very well in the first 25 overs they can compensate in the next 25 overs.
